Prepositions of place and al / del

Where things are (en, cerca de, enfrente de…) and where you go (a); a + el = al, de + el = del.

Level A1en casa · voy al cine · cerca del banco

en: where something is

en says where someone or something is. It goes with estar, hay and vivo, and covers what other languages often split into “in”, “on” and “at”:

  • Estoy en el museo. — I'm at the museum.
  • Las llaves están en la mesa. — The keys are on the table.
  • Hay un bar en la estación. — There's a bar in the station.
  • Vivo en Madrid. — I live in Madrid.

a: where you go

a says where you are going. For now you know three forms of ir (to go): voy (I go), vas (you go), va (he / she goes; you go, formal).

  • Voy a la biblioteca. — I'm going to the library.
  • ¿Vas a casa? — Are you going home?
  • Ana va a la estación. — Ana is going to the station.

en answers ¿dónde? (where?), a answers ¿adónde? (where to?): Estoy en el cine. — Voy al cine.

a + el = al, de + el = del

Only two pairs merge into one word: a + el = al, de + el = del. Always write them together:

  • Voy al cine. (not a el cine)
  • El bar está al lado del banco. (not de el banco)

la, los and las never merge: a la plaza, de la estación, a los bares, de las tiendas.

cerca or cerca de?

Most place phrases end in de, so before el you get del: enfrente del hotel, cerca del parque, but al final de la calle. junto a ends in a: junto al banco.

When no noun follows, drop de: El banco está cerca. Mi casa está enfrente. With a noun, keep it: El banco está cerca del hotel.

enfrente de or delante de?

delante de is “in front of”, on the same side: El taxi está delante del hotel.

enfrente de is “opposite”, facing it, often across the street: El banco está enfrente del hotel.
