Preterite: regular verbs

Completed actions in the past with regular -ar, -er and -ir verbs.

Level A2hablé · comiste · vivió

When to use the preterite

The preterite (in Spanish grammar pretérito indefinido, or simply indefinido) tells what happened at a finished moment in the past:

  • a single event: Ayer hablé con Ana.
  • an action in a closed period: El año pasado viví en Madrid.
  • one event after another: Entré, comí y salí.

Verbs in -car, -gar and -zar change only in the yo form: buscaste, llegó, empezamos are regular. Others like them: tocar → toqué, pagar → pagué, jugar → jugué.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Ayer hablo con Ana.Right: ✓ Ayer hablé con Ana.Ayer needs a past tense; hablo is the present.
  • Wrong: Él hablo con el profesor.Right: ✓ Él habló con el profesor.Without the accent, hablo means “I speak”.
  • Wrong: Yo buscé un hotel.Right: ✓ Yo busqué un hotel.Verbs in -car write qu before e.
  • Wrong: Tú hablastes con ella.Right: ✓ Tú hablaste con ella. The tú form of the preterite has no final -s, unlike the present (hablas).
