Pronouns after prepositions: para mí, conmigo

After a preposition, yo and tú become mí and ti (para mí, sin ti), with con they become conmigo and contigo, and the other persons don't change.

Level A2para mí · sin ti · conmigo · contigo

Para mí, sin ti

After a preposition (para, de, sin, a, en…), Spanish uses the subject pronouns with two exceptions: yo becomes mí and tú becomes ti.

  • Este regalo es para mí. (This gift is for me.)
  • No voy sin ti. (I'm not going without you.)
  • La fiesta es para ella. (The party is for her.)

English changes more pronouns (“I” → “for me”, “she” → “for her”); Spanish changes only yo and tú.

Mí or mi?

Mí (me) has a written accent; mi (my) has none and always goes before a noun:

  • Es mi regalo. (It's my gift.)
  • El regalo es para mí. (The gift is for me.)

Ti never has an accent: para ti, not para tí. Él (he, him) keeps its accent after a preposition too: con él.

Conmigo, contigo

With con, the first two persons have special forms:

  • con + yo → conmigo (with me)
  • con + tú → contigo (with you)

Never con mí or con ti. The other persons are regular: con él, con usted, con nosotros, con ellas.

  • ¿Quieres bailar conmigo? (Do you want to dance with me?)
  • Mañana voy al cine contigo. (Tomorrow I'm going to the movies with you.)

Entre, según, excepto: yo and tú

After entre (between), según (according to) and excepto (except), use yo and tú, not mí and ti:

  • Entre tú y yo, la fiesta es aburrida. (Between you and me, the party is boring.)
  • Según tú, la fiesta empieza a las nueve. (According to you, the party starts at nine.)
  • Todos bailaron excepto yo. (Everyone danced except me.)

A mí me gusta

With gustar and encantar, a mí, a ti, a él… add emphasis or a contrast. The short pronoun me, te, le… stays:

  • A mí me encantan las sorpresas. (I love surprises.)
  • —Me gusta esta música. —A mí también. (—I like this music. —Me too.)
  • A mí no me gusta bailar, ¿y a ti? (I don't like dancing, and you?)

In short answers, say a mí, a ti, never a yo or a tú.
