Preterite: irregular verbs

Frequent verbs with their own preterite stems: fui, tuve, hice, dijo.

Level A2fui · tuve · hice · dijo

One pattern for most irregular verbs

Many frequent verbs have an irregular preterite (indefinido). Most of them follow one pattern: a new stem plus the endings -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron, without written accents.

  • tener → tuv-: tuve, tuviste, tuvo
  • hacer → hic-: hice, hiciste, hizo

The stress falls on the stem: tuve, tuvo (compare regular comí, comió). After j the ellos ending is -eron: dijeron, trajeron.

Tip: learn the yo form of each verb (tuve, estuve, hice, dije); the other persons follow from it.

Ser and ir share the same preterite; the context tells them apart: Fue un día bonito. (ser) — Fue al cine. (ir).

One-syllable forms never take a written accent: fui, fue, di, dio, vi, vio.

Stem changes in -ir verbs

-ir verbs that change their stem in the present change e → i or o → u in the preterite, but only in the third person (él / ella / usted and ellos / ellas / ustedes). Stem-changing -ar and -er verbs are regular in the preterite: pensé, volvió.
