Que: who, which, that
Que joins a description to a noun, to say which person or thing you mean. It works for people and for things, like English “who”, “which” and “that”:
- Tengo una vecina que habla cinco idiomas. (I have a neighbour who speaks five languages.)
- El chico que vive al lado es muy simpático. (The guy who lives next door is very nice.)
- Esta es la casa que quiero alquilar. (This is the house that I want to rent.)
One form, never left out
Que never changes: it is the same word for a man, a woman, one thing or many:
- el vecino que…, la vecina que…, los vecinos que…, las casas que…
And it is never left out. In English you can say “the house I want”; in Spanish it is always la casa que quiero.
Donde: where
After a place (la casa, la calle, el barrio, la ciudad), use donde for “where”:
- Este es el barrio donde vivo. (This is the neighbourhood where I live.)
- La cafetería donde trabaja Laura está en esta calle. (The café where Laura works is on this street.)
Donde already means “in which”, so no en is needed.
Que, donde, lo que
| Refers to | Word | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a person | que | la vecina que vive al lado |
| a thing | que | la lámpara que compré |
| a place | donde | el barrio donde vivo |
| an idea, no noun before it | lo que | lo que necesito |
Que or donde after a place?
A place can take que too. Look at the verb:
- the verb takes the place with en (vivo en la casa, trabajo en la oficina) → donde: la casa donde vivo;
- the place is what you buy, rent or see (compré la casa) → que: la casa que compré.
Es la casa donde vive mi abuela. (It's the house where my grandmother lives.) — Es la casa que alquilamos. (It's the house that we rent.)
No accent mark
Question words have an accent mark: ¿Qué quieres? ¿Dónde vives? The relatives que and donde have none: la casa que quiero, la calle donde vivo.
In speech they sound almost the same, so in writing the accent mark shows which one you mean.
Lo que: what, the thing that
When there is no noun before it, use lo que for “what, the thing that”:
- Lo que necesito es una casa más grande. (What I need is a bigger house.)
- Esto es lo que compró Ana. (This is what Ana bought.)
- Lo que más me gusta es el balcón. (What I like most is the balcony.)
In a question it is qué: ¿Qué necesitas? In a statement it is lo que: Lo que necesito es…
