Preterite versus imperfect

Preterite for completed events, imperfect for background, habits and descriptions.

Level A2leía · sonó · era · fue

Two past tenses, two roles

Spanish tells a story with both past tenses:

  • the preterite (indefinido): what happened, completed events that move the story forward;
  • the imperfect (imperfecto): the background, descriptions, habits, situations and actions in progress.

Leía cuando sonó el teléfono. — I was reading (background) when the phone rang (event).

Event or background?

Preterite: the eventImperfect: the background
Ayer llovió mucho.Llovía cuando salí de casa.
Fui a Roma en 2019.De niño iba a Roma cada verano.
La fiesta fue genial.La casa era grande y bonita.
Trabajé allí tres años.Trabajaba allí cuando te conocí.
De repente entró un hombre.El hombre llevaba un sombrero.

How to choose

Ask yourself:

  • Is it a completed event, with a clear beginning, end or length (tres años, dos horas)? → indefinido
  • Is it a description, a habit, the time, someone's age or something in progress? → imperfecto

A closed period takes the preterite even when it is long: Viví en Madrid diez años.

Examples

  • Leía cuando sonó el teléfono.I was reading when the phone rang.Leía: an action in progress; sonó: the event that interrupts it.
